If the gank squad isn't inside the base yet, the enemy 7 team, if they're going to go around the flag and back the same way the gank squad went, will have a huge gap to fill.
Think about it visually. Your gank squad is a long way ahead of the pursuing group. In my experience, what ends up happening is that the gank squad has free reign to run them around in circles, ganking NPCs as they go. The more time they waste chasing you in circles is less time they have supporting their flagrunner or defending your gank.
The gank squad usually has time to kill off 1-3 archers before the team is bearing down on them. Plus there's the fact that the defensive team should be able to hold off for morale. Even if you sacrifice your entire gank squad, it's still worthwhile if you get morale and it's even more worthwhile if you kill off a few archers that allows for faster entries into the base later on and better odds at VoD.
My choice would be to run in and start ganking and make a hastry retreat out the front door just before they get in cast range, giving enough leeway for your monk to remove pin downs.

If enemy starts to chase your ganking team with its entire force (at catapult maps specially) it is time to congratulate yourself for perfect start for game.
Gank team probably will just kill 0-3 archer and leave via front door, or they can start to slowdown enemy, depending on their build, by setting traps, criplling shots, fow ward etc. With any luck they can at least slowdown/kill enemy flagrunner.
More important is that what your FLAG team is doing while enemy chases your gank team. They have plenty of time to repair catapult (usually priority one), set up flag and kill those 3 npc in front of enemy gate. After this is accomplished your team have huge tactical advantage to game.

Its funny you asked this question because it happened to us on the catapult map.
We split and their whole team followed our split squad, we decided (wrongly) for the flag team to follow them. It ended up in our immediate demise.
What we shoulda done was have flag team kill front archers and fix catapult like the above poster said. Oh well gotta learn somehow.
Note : If you split on the map with that seed bridge thing, watch they dont try and all run for your offensive split team as they will get killed. Tactic here is (WM Tactic) block the bridge with the flag team.
